NMDC Steel Limited is a Govt. Company under administrative control of Ministry of Steel, Govt. of India. The shares of the Company are listed on BSE, NSE and Calcutta Stock Exchange. The Company owns and operates the state of the art 3.0 MTPA steel plant at Nagarnar, Chhattisgarh.
The Steel plant has been built at a cost of approximately Rs. 24000 crores. The Plant is set to establish its mark in the Hot Rolled market with its repertoire of high grade Hot Rolled steel that is slated to meet the requirements of several key consuming sectors on the strength of its technology that includes its most modern Mill. The Steel Plant’s competitive advantage also stems from its iron ore supply linkage with Bailadila mines, barely 100 kms. from Nagarnar.
The product mix of Nagarnar Steel Plant consists of low carbon steel, HSLA & Dual Phase Steel and API quality steel that can be rolled in to thickness range from 1mm to 16 mm. With its capability to roll 1650mm wide HR, the Thin Slab caster at Nagarnar Steel Plant is the widest Mill in the public sector. HR Coils, Sheets and Plates coming off India’s latest and most modern mill are expected to meet the growing demand for quality HR required in the manufacture of LPG cylinders, bridges, steel structures, ships, large diameter pipes, storage tanks, boilers, railway wagons and pressure vessels and in construction of tanks, railway cars, bicycle frames, engineering and military equipment and automobile and truck wheels, frames and body parts. The plant will also be producing special type of steels to be used in manufacture of generators, motors, transformers and automobiles at a later stage. The Plant has started the commercial production of final product i.e. HR Coils on 31st August 2023.
Nagarnar Steel Plant
As a forward integration and business diversification plan, NMDC is in the process of commissioning its 3 MTPA Integrated Steel Plant (NISP) at Nagarnar in the state of Chhattisgarh.
The major technological facilities of the Nagarnar Steel Plant include one of the largest Blast Furnaces (BF) in India with a capacity 4506 m3 (Useful Volume), Hot Strip Mill coupled with Thin Slab Caster (TSC), Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF), and two 7 m tall Coke Ovens. The Plant will be operating on the BF – BOF route.
The final Steel Product will consist of Hot Rolled Coil ranging in thickness from 1.0 mm to 12.0 mm, with a provision upto 16.0 mm. The products of this plant will meet the country’s growing demands of flat products in high grade steel and will contribute significantly towards India becoming self-reliant in the Steel sector. It will also provide in house generation of 80 MW power using waste gas and waste heat and the By Product Plant will be producing tar, naphthalene, and elementary sulphur.
Unique Features:
- It is the first time that a Hot Strip Mill with Thin Slab Caster is being installed in a PSU Steel Plant for the production of HR Coil which is used in the manufacturing of value added steel.
- With energy efficient cutting edge technology, the energy consumption of this Plant is estimated to be 5.9G Cal/T.
- The integrated steel plant will be operating with a Zero Liquid Discharge, ensuring that effluent water is treated and reused.
- The latest Wagon Tippling arrangement which is capable of handling DFC Wagons in future, is being installed in the Plant.
- The Steel Plant houses eco-friendly coke-oven batteries and recovery type CDCP. It will also have the single largest coke-oven gas handling By Product Plant.
- Converter, a totally automated material handling system is being put in the BOF Shop of the Plant.
- NISP is building a Power Blowing Station based on 100% CO gas, with zero use of fossil fuel.
